Alefba OdV

Alefba is a volunteer-led non-profit organization founded in Italy with a mission to empower Afghan women and girls through education, vocational training, entrepreneurship, and awareness programs. We work at a time when millions in Afghanistan are denied their basic right to learn.

Our name, Alefba—meaning “alphabet” in Persian—reflects our belief that knowledge is the foundation of change. Through literacy courses, mentoring, workshops, and storytelling, we equip women with the tools to reclaim their rights, build their skills, and become active members of their communities. As an inclusive organization with members from Italy, the U.S., and Afghanistan, we collaborate with local and international partners to enhance our impact. We advocate for Afghan women’s rights on global platforms, amplifying their voices and raising awareness of their struggles. Our goal is to break cycles of poverty and dependency, fostering a future where Afghan women and girls can thrive, contribute to their communities, and live with dignity and respect.

What We Believe In

We believe in the transformative power of education. Our values are rooted in inclusion, women’s leadership, diversity, and a shared commitment to uplifting those whose voices have been silenced.

How We Work

We are an international, grassroots network of volunteers from Afghanistan, Iran, Italy, the U.S., Germany, the Czech Republic, and beyond. Through language courses, digital literacy, vocational training, and storytelling, we help women and girls gain the tools and confidence to shape their futures.
We act with care, transparency, and collaboration, working closely with local communities and associations to ensure relevance and respect.

“We are the stories we tell ourselves.” – Joan Didion

Fatima grew up in rural Afghanistan believing school was only for boys. Her escape was an old radio, which she’d secretly take to the mountains to listen to voices speaking about learning. Years later, thanks to one chance to attend school, she became Afghanistan’s first female tour guide. Today, she studies at a top university in Italy.

Afghan Girls Use Art to Speak Out for Their Rights

In a world where their voices have been silenced and their rights stripped away, Afghan girls are turning to art as their quiet form of resistance. Through painting, poetry, and storytelling, they express what cannot be said aloud, grief, hope, and the dream of a brighter future. This piece explores how creativity has become a lifeline, a classroom, and a revolution in color.
